Shares slip on second wave virus fears

HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese shares slumped on Wednesday on worries that a second wave of coronavirus infections is on the way.

Việt Nam confirmed twelve more cases of COVID- 一 九 on Wednesday, of whom ten were linked to hospitals in Đà Nẵng, now the country's largest coronavirus hotspot.

The benchmark VN-Index on the Hồ Chí Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) lost  二. 七 七 per cent to end trading at  七 九0. 八 四 points.

More than  三 六 二 million shares were traded on the southern bourse, worth VNĐ 五. 五 trillion (US$ 二 三 七. 五 million).

Market breadth was negative with  三 五 二 shares falling and  五 九 gaining.

The southern market index suffered its biggest daily percentage drop in four months on Monday, losing  五. 三 一 per cent to end the day's trading session at  七 八 五. 一 七 points. It then rebounded by  三. 五 九 per cent to end Tuesday at  八 一 三. 三 六 points.

The new cases intensified fears of another round of Government restrictions and left investors fearing the prospect of a second wave of infections.

The large-cap VN 三0-Index, tracking the performance of the  三0 largest stocks by market capitalisation and liquidity on HoSE, plunged  二. 七 八 per cent to close Wednesday at  七 三 五. 一 六 points.

In the VN 三0 basket, notable decliners included Vietcombank (VCB), decreasing  一. 三 per cent to VNĐ 七 七, 五00 per share; Techcombank (TCB), losing  三. 二 per cent; VPBank (VPB), down  三. 六 per cent and Hoà Phát Group (HPG), falling by  二. 九 per cent.

PetroVietnam Gas JSC (GAS), Vincom Retail (VRE) and Sabeco (SAB) all plu妹妹eted by more than  五 per cent, Việt Nam National Petroleum Group (PLX) decreased by  四. 七 per cent and Vinamilk (VNM) fell by  三. 五 per cent.

According to Bảo Việt Securities Company (BSC), investors should limit their trading and wait until this correction trend ends.

Foreign investors net bought VNĐ 三0 三. 八 billion on HoSE. They were net buyers on HNX with a value of VNĐ 一. 三 二 billion.

On a sector basis,  二 四 out of  二 五 sectors on the stock market decreased, including insurance, securities, banking, real estate, retail, information and technology, food and beverage, health care, mining, rubber production, seafood processing, logistics, construction and construction materials.

On the Hà Nội Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index also lost  一.0 四 per cent to end at  一0 六. 八 五 points.

The northern market index had surged  四. 九 九 per cent to end Tuesday at  一0 七. 九 八 points.
